It was very interesting and useful. I had two market sizing cases during my interviews and the materials were very useful.

You'll have to solve a market sizing question

In a recent blog post, I’ve analyzed over 260 case interview examples.

I found out that 15% of the cases from this list are market sizing questions (also known as guesstimates).

If we assume that you’ll apply to 5 different consulting firms and have 6 interviews on average per consulting firm (hence, 30 interviews total), then you should have to solve between 4 and 5 market sizing questions during your job interviews.

Average Number Of Market Sizing Questions

Therefore, if you are applying for a position in Consulting – whether it be at an MBB or a Big 4 – at least one of your case interviews will be a market sizing question.

Partners at McKinsey, BCG, or Bain & Company are very busy people...

That’s why they love using market sizing questions during case interviews.

First, because there is very little preparation work to do beforehand.

Secondly, because a market sizing question is a powerful hiring tool:

In a 20-minute market sizing question, a Partner can assess your case structuring, business acumen, communication, and quantitative skills.

Bottom line:

If you want to land a job in Consulting, the last hurdle can be a market sizing question

And these Partners want more than just a number...

Believe it or not, but the job of a Consultant is not to throw in their client’s face some numbers.

The job of a Consultant?

To make numbers speak.

In other words:

Interpret data to derive insights and translate these insights into recommendations that will solve the client’s problem.

So, Partners will assess your ability to go beyond the sizing exercise and want to see how you use your business acumen to interpret numbers.

Are you doing these things right?

A quick quiz about your ability to solve market sizing problems:

  • Are you able to organize your thoughts easily and quickly to come up with a simple approach?
  • Do you know that there are many better ways than starting with the population and then segmenting the population by age group?
  • Do you know what are the exact questions you must ask (and avoid asking) at the beginning to clarify the problem?
  • Do you know when it’s your turn to make an assumption or when you can ask your interviewer for help?
  • Do you know when and how to use your business acumen to answer market sizing questions?
  • Are you able to always complete any calculations correctly and quickly? Even in a stressful context like in a job interview?

Have you answered ‘no’ or ‘maybe’ to any of these questions?

That’s why I have created a program dedicated to market sizing questions.

Now that I had all these interviews at Bain and BCG, I understand why you have an entire course for market sizing questions.

The market sizing questions I had during my interviews were more difficult than the ones that can be easily found online.

Thanks for your help!
